Water Quality & Legionella

Legionnaires’ Disease –  A Brief History

On 21st July 1976, the American Legion met at Bellevue Stratford Hotel, Philidelphia.

More than 4000 world war II veterans, familes and friend assembled to take part in the legions’ 58th convention, about 600 of whom stayed at the hotel.

A few days after, some of the participants fell ill, the symptoms were breathing difficulties, coughing and fever. Four days after the convention on 27th July, a number of the guests started to die.

Dr Joseph McDade and his team finally discovered the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ Disease early in 1977, it was discovered that the bacteria resided in the cooling towers at the hotel.

The bacillus was being spread by the air conditioning equipment within the hotel in aerosolised water droplets.

The HSE provides guidance including the following:

Legionella Risk Assessments

Legionella Risk Assessments & Remedial Works

The Legionnella bacteria grows within domestic water systems, typically where water stagnates or becomes warm.

A legionella risk assessment will assess the domestic water system within your property and identify areas of risk, these may be where there are large volumes of stored water, unused water outlets, overheating of cold water supplies or incorrectly installed pipework and equipment.

Some premises have specific requirements applicable to the nature of their use, such examples of these may include health care premises (HTM04) or commercial laundries.

We can assist with Legionella Risk Assessments at your property along with any remedial works identified.

Testimonials

After a legionella test highlighted some serious issues at the school, Lord Combustion carried out rectification works across both of our sites. I was really impressed by the professional but practical approach and the speed with which everything was dealt with. The engineers who came out to do the work were excellent, friendly and approachable, but professional at all times. Senior staff commented on how efficient and professional the service was and the overall conduct of the engineers. The overall service has been fantastic and i cannot recommend them highly enough.
