Heating and hot water systems are complex and essential to the smooth operation of any business. Problems can disrupt operations and increase energy costs.
As award-winning commercial heating and ventilation specialists, Lord Combustion Services have been keeping people warm since 1982.
We offer a wide range of energy-efficient equipment to suit any business need and budget, and our expert team can handle installations quickly and efficiently, including retrofitting new appliances to existing systems.
Our team of nearly 50 staff serve more than 1,000 customers across the West Midlands from our base in Dudley Road East, Oldbury.
Aside from large commercial installations and boiler breakdowns, we also help our clients solve a wide range of heating and hot water problems on their residential and landlord portfolios. Here are some of the most common heating and hot water issues we get called out for when we attend, and their potential solutions:
Insufficient heating
The problem: Inadequate heat output, cold spots or uneven temperature distribution
Solutions:
- Check the thermostat: Ensure it is set to the correct temperature and functioning properly.
- Inspect the boiler: Look for issues like low water pressure, a faulty pump or a clogged filter.
- Examine radiators: Bleed radiators to remove trapped air and check for blockages or scale buildup.
- Assess insulation: Ensure proper insulation to prevent heat loss.
Inefficient energy usage
Problem: High energy bills and environmental impact
Solutions:
- Regular maintenance: Keep your system clean and well-maintained.
- Upgrade to energy-efficient equipment: Consider replacing old, inefficient equipment.
- Insulate pipes and tanks to reduce heat loss.
- Implement smart controls: Use smart thermostats to optimise energy usage.
Boiler noise
Problem: common boiler noises such as whistling, banging, gurgling or humming
Solutions:
- Kettling or whistling: This is often caused by a buildup of limescale within the boiler’s heat exchanger. A qualified gas engineer can clean the heat exchanger or install a water softener to prevent future limescale buildup.
- Banging or popping: This can be caused by trapped air, low water pressure or loose pipes or fittings. Bleed your radiators to release trapped air, top up your boiler’s pressure according to the manufacturer’s instructions and tighten any loose connections or secure pipes with appropriate supports.
- Gurgling: This can be caused by air pockets in the system or by sludge buildup. Bleed your radiators to release trapped air. A qualified gas engineer may need to power flush the system to remove sludge.
- Vibrating or humming: This can be caused by a faulty pump or by vibrations from the boiler itself. A qualified gas engineer can diagnose and replace a faulty pump. Ensure your boiler is properly mounted and secured to prevent vibrations.
Low hot water pressure
The problem: Weak water flow from taps and showers
Solutions:
- Check the pump: A faulty pump can reduce water pressure.
- Inspect the pipes: Look for leaks, blockages or corrosion.
- Clean the aerator: Mineral buildup can restrict water flow.
- Consider a water booster pump: For severe pressure issues, a booster pump can increase water pressure.
Water leaks
Problem: Water damage and potential health hazards
Solutions:
- Identify the source: Use a leak detection device to pinpoint the leak.
- Repair or replace: Fix leaking pipes or components promptly.
- Check for signs of water damage: Monitor walls, ceilings and floors for signs of water damage.
If you are unsure about the cause of your heating or hot water issue, it is always best to consult a qualified gas engineer. They can diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate solution.
Scheduling a professional to carry out regular inspections of your heating and hot water systems is also a great way to identify potential issues early and ensure their reliable and efficient operation. We always recommend that boilers are serviced annually.
